My Personal Journey to Moissanite

My obsession with moissanite began over 15 years ago when I was planning an engagement. I discovered that the diamond ring I liked was priced at around $10,000, but a moissanite alternative—even when set in platinum—would have been under $1,500. Although that relationship didn’t last, my love for moissanite only grew as the gem became more widely known and started to appear in alternative colors and unique cuts, such as hexagon, portrait, and various round cuts designed to accentuate its sparkle.

The Body Jewelry Challenge

Despite its many benefits, moissanite hasn’t yet become a staple in the body piercing community. Like many fellow millennials with an edgy style, I had upgraded my earrings to high-end white gold with diamond ends from BVLA—a costly affair that quickly pushed my jewelry spending past $2,000 in a single year. I began comparing the cost savings of moissanite versus diamonds in engagement rings and wondered why this ethical, sparkling gemstone wasn’t available for body jewelry. I still craved the quality and shine of white gold combined with the durability and cut quality of a genuine gemstone (not CZ), but nothing on the market fit the bill.

The Birth of Lux Punk

This curiosity led me to start my small business, Lux Punk. I envisioned high-quality, flatback earrings in white gold featuring moissanite gems—a perfect blend of ethical luxury and personal style. Inspired by detailed discussions on communities like r/moissanite and message boards on betterthandiamond.com, I learned that regular people could collaborate with manufacturers to design custom moissanite jewelry pieces. This sparked my journey of contacting moissanite specialists and body jewelry manufacturers to create something truly unique.

With meticulous design input, we developed nickel-free, low-profile, bezel-set moissanite earring ends that fit standard 16-gauge titanium flatback earrings.
